A deadly drug-resistant fungus, Candida auris (C. auris), is spreading at an alarming rate across U.S. hospitals and nursing homes, posing a significant health threat. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) first identified C. auris in the U.S. in 2016 and issued an urgent warning in 2023 due to its rapid spread and resistance to antifungal treatments.
What is Candida Auris and Why is it Dangerous?
C. auris is a highly contagious yeast that causes severe infections, including life-threatening bloodstream infections. It spreads easily in healthcare settings and is resistant to multiple antifungal medications, making it extremely difficult to treat.
According to the CDC, 30–60% of individuals diagnosed with C. auris have died, though many had underlying health conditions. Cases have doubled annually since 2016, with 4,514 infections reported in 2023, highlighting its growing threat.
Experts Raise Alarm Over Rising Infections
The CDC has classified C. auris as an “urgent antimicrobial resistance (AR) threat,” calling for increased surveillance, better diagnostic tools, and strict infection control measures.
A recent study in the American Journal of Infection Control (AJIC) found a rapid increase in C. auris infections, with new sources of transmission emerging. Dr. Meghan Lyman, CDC epidemiologist, stressed the importance of expanded lab testing and improved prevention strategies.
Melissa Nolan, an epidemiology expert at the University of South Carolina, warned, “If this pathogen is resistant to treatment, there’s no cure. Patients are left without options.” She also noted that C. auris can persist on surfaces in hospital environments, making disinfection crucial in preventing its spread.
How to Prevent Candida Auris Infections
Healthcare facilities are urged to enhance infection control measures, improve hygiene protocols, and ensure early detection to curb the spread of C. auris. With its rapid expansion, experts emphasize the need for immediate action to prevent a national health crisis.
