Myanmar Earthquake : Massive 7.7-Magnitude Quake Leaves Over 2,000 Injured; International Aid Arrives
Mandalay, Myanmar (March 29, 2025) – The devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday afternoon has resulted in more than 1,000 deaths, with 2,376 people injured, according to reports from the ruling military junta. The massive quake caused widespread destruction, collapsing buildings, damaging roads, and disrupting infrastructure.
Death Toll Crosses 1,000; Rescue Teams on High Alert
The Myanmar junta’s information team confirmed that 1,002 people had died. Junta chief Min Aung Hlaing ordered immediate search and rescue operations to assist those trapped and provide relief.
“Infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and buildings were severely damaged, leading to multiple casualties,” the junta stated on state media.
Min Aung Hlaing also warned the death toll may rise and urged foreign nations to assist.
Global Aid Begins to Arrive
A Chinese rescue team arrived on Saturday to assist in relief efforts. Meanwhile, Russia and the United States have pledged humanitarian aid. According to Russia’s state news agency TASS, Moscow sent 120 trained rescuers, including medical teams and search dogs, to help in disaster-hit areas.
U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed speaking with Myanmar officials. His administration plans to extend humanitarian support. The extent of U.S. aid efforts is yet to be disclosed.
Epicenter and Widespread Damage in Mandalay
The epicenter was near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, where heavy damage was reported. Hundreds of buildings, including homes, businesses, and cultural landmarks, were either completely destroyed or severely damaged.
The quake’s impact was also felt in neighboring Thailand, where multiple buildings suffered damage. The strong tremors caused panic, leading to mass evacuations.
USGS Predicts Higher Death Toll
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) predicts the death toll could exceed 10,000 as authorities continue recovery efforts.
Susan Hough, a USGS Earthquake Hazards Program scientist, said predicting an earthquake’s impact is difficult due to various factors.
“When an earthquake strikes during the daytime, as it did in Myanmar, people are awake and can respond better,” she told Reuters.
However, the destruction suggests Myanmar may suffer losses greater than its Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Ongoing Rescue Efforts and Future Challenges
Authorities are working tirelessly to reach trapped victims and provide medical aid. The government has also set up temporary shelters for the displaced.
As Myanmar deals with the worst earthquake in recent history, international assistance remains crucial for relief and rebuilding efforts.
