Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the New Pamban Bridge in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, on April 6, 2025. This modern 2.08-kilometer bridge spans the Palk Strait, linking Rameswaram Island to the Indian mainland. It replaces the iconic 110-year-old Pamban Bridge, which was retired in 2022 due to aging and high upkeep.
A Big Leap in Rail Infrastructure
Before the launch, engineers conducted a successful trial of the bridgeās vertical-lift system. During the ceremony, PM Modi operated the lift mechanism remotely. The bridgeās central spanāstretching 72.5 metersācan rise 17 meters, allowing ships to pass beneath with ease. He also flagged off the RameswaramāTambaram Express and launched a Coast Guard ship, officially starting operations on the new structure.
The bridge stands three meters taller than the old one. This extra height allows smaller vessels to pass without needing to lift the span, making operations smoother.
Built for Strength and Longevity
The project cost about ā¹550 crore. Engineers designed the bridge to endure harsh marine conditions. They used stainless steel reinforcements, applied corrosion-resistant coatings, and added fully welded joints for durability. The structure rests on 333 piles and 101 pile caps. Its dual-track design supports both freight traffic and semi-high-speed trains, including the Vande Bharat Express.
Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future
The original Pamban Bridge played a key role in connecting pilgrims and traders for over a century. Due to corrosion and frequent repairs, the government decided to build a replacement. PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the new bridge in 2019. Today, it stands as a modern symbol of progress.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also visited the famous Ramanathaswamy Temple during his trip. He offered prayers and later unveiled new road and rail projects worth ā¹8,300 crore. These projects aim to improve connectivity and support Tamil Naduās development.
