BMW India surprised everyone at the Bharat Mobility Expo by launching the new BMW iX1 Long Wheelbase (LWB) electric SUV with a shockingly competitive price tag. For years, electric vehicles (EVs) have carried a premium over their petrol-powered counterparts — but not anymore. Priced at Rs 49 lakh (ex-showroom, India), the new iX1 LWB is actually Rs 1.8 lakh cheaper than the petrol BMW X1 and a massive Rs 18 lakh less than the previous iX1 standard wheelbase model.
But here’s the interesting part — the iX1 LWB offers more range and more space, and while it slightly compromises on power, it’s still every bit a BMW. So what’s the full experience like? How much range does it deliver? And what do you give up compared to the older model? Let’s break it down.
Design and Dimensions
Visually, the iX1 LWB doesn’t stray far from its predecessor. It carries forward the signature BMW front and rear designs while riding on stylish 18-inch M design alloy wheels. The big difference is its size—116 mm longer than the outgoing model, with 108 mm added to the wheelbase alone. This makes the SUV not just look bigger but also adds precious space inside, which Indian car buyers particularly appreciate.

Interior and Features
Step inside the cabin, and it feels familiar yet subtly upgraded. The mocha brown upholstery combined with M badging on the steering wheel and door sills adds a sporty touch. Feature-wise, the iX1 LWB packs:
- Widescreen Curved Display — a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster paired with a 10.7-inch infotainment touchscreen
- Panoramic sunroof
- Dual-zone climate control
- 12-speaker, 205W Harman Kardon sound system
The real upgrade is at the back. Thanks to the extended wheelbase, the rear seat space has improved dramatically. The almost flat floor — a perk of the EV platform — ensures three adults can sit comfortably. The seats offer ample cushioning, good under-thigh support, and reclining backrests adjustable up to 28.5 degrees. BMW has truly nailed comfort in the rear cabin this time.

Performance, Range & Charging
Now, the big question — how did BMW lower the price without compromising too much? The answer lies in the powertrain. While the older iX1 featured a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup, the new iX1 LWB uses a single front-mounted motor.
- Power: 205 hp
- Torque: 250 Nm
- Range: Claimed 535 km per charge, with a realistic 415-420 km in actual driving
- Battery: 66.4 kWh
- Charging: 130 kW DC fast charging can top up from 10% to 80% in 29 minutes (or add 120 km in 10 minutes)
Losing one motor not only reduces the cost but also boosts range, since there’s less demand on the battery.

Driving Experience
Even with less power and a front-wheel-drive layout, the iX1 LWB stays true to BMW’s driving DNA. It might lack the tail-happy nature of rear-wheel- or all-wheel-drive BMWs, but it still feels quick, planted, and composed. The instant torque delivery (250 Nm from standstill) makes city driving a breeze and highway overtakes effortless. It’s stable in a straight line and corners with confidence, offering decent steering feedback.
However, there are areas for improvement:
- The regenerative braking controls could’ve been more accessible with paddle shifters rather than buried in touchscreen menus.
- A 360-degree camera system would’ve been a great addition, although the rear camera is decent enough considering the price.

Final Verdict
BMW has made a smart, calculated move with the iX1 LWB. By offering more space, greater range, improved comfort, and a significantly lower price, they’ve made owning a BMW much more attainable for young Indian buyers. The low EMI options and buyback plans further sweeten the deal.
In short, the BMW iX1 LWB is a well-balanced, practical, and premium electric SUV that delivers on what matters most while still retaining the essence of what makes a BMW a BMW.
