Alexander Volkanovski made a triumphant return to the top of the featherweight division at UFC 314, reclaiming his UFC title with a hard-fought victory.
After suffering back-to-back losses against Islam Makhachev and Ilia Topuria, many questioned the future of the 36-year-old Aussie star. But when Topuria vacated the belt in a shocking move, the UFC showed confidence in Volkanovski by matching him up against Diego Lopes for the vacant title.
Volkanovski, as always, rose to the occasion, delivering a classic, gritty performance in Miami. He secured a decision win over Lopes, silencing doubters and becoming the king of the 145-pound division once again.

Islam Makhachev Reacts to Volkanovski’s UFC 314 Win
Heading into the UFC 314 bout, fans worried about Volkanovski’s durability after his recent knockout defeats. Despite those concerns, the featherweight legend turned back the clock.
Islam Makhachev, who shares one of MMA’s most intense yet respectful rivalries with Volkanovski, wasted no time acknowledging his former opponent’s achievement. The lightweight champion, who once had a razor-close fight with Volkanovski in Australia, took to social media with a simple, heartfelt message:
“Congrats legend.”
It was a classy nod from Makhachev, recognizing the man who arguably gave him his toughest test inside the Octagon.

Volkanovski Eager for a Quick Return, Eyes July Fight
Known for his relentless work ethic, Volkanovski has always thrived on staying active. Even during his first title reign, he openly spoke about how regular training camps helped him manage his mental health.
Ironically, that same relentless schedule contributed to his recent setbacks. Yet, reclaiming the belt at his age — especially after tough losses — makes his UFC 314 comeback story even more remarkable.
And it seems ‘The Great’ isn’t slowing down. Speaking at the post-fight press conference, Volkanovski revealed his plans for a possible July return, with his sights set on a clash with Movsar Evloev.
“September? If everything’s good, I’d probably like to go quicker than that, to be honest. That’s probably the second fight, so if I’m good, maybe I can get a fight in July and then September, we can fit it in — Movsar, if they want to do that, a quick turnaround with Movsar if I don’t have busted hands,” Volkanovski said.
Despite taking some damage against Lopes, early reports suggest that Volkanovski avoided serious injuries, making a July comeback very realistic.
What’s Next for ‘The Great’?
Now back at the top, Alexander Volkanovski seems hungrier than ever. If his body holds up and he’s cleared for July, fans could see him defend his title sooner than expected. A fight with Movsar Evloev would add an intriguing new chapter to his already legendary career.
For now, Volkanovski can savor the moment — and the well-deserved respect from champions like Islam Makhachev.
