Indian Navy ‘s Western Naval Command intercepted suspicious vessels and seized over 2,500 kg of narcotics in the Western Indian Ocean, reinforcing its commitment to maritime security.
Indian Navy’s Major Drug Bust in the Western Indian Ocean
On March 31, the frontline frigate INS Tarkash received intelligence from the Navy’s P8I aircraft about suspicious vessel movements. Since these vessels were likely trafficking illicit narcotics, the Navy acted swiftly.
To ensure a thorough operation, INS Tarkash interrogated all suspicious vessels with help from the P8I aircraft and the Maritime Operations Centre in Mumbai. Additionally, helicopters monitored vessel activities to track any evasive actions.
Special Ops Uncover Massive Narcotics Haul
A specialist boarding team, supported by Marine Commandos, boarded the suspect vessel for a detailed search. As a result, they discovered sealed packets containing 2,500 kg of narcotics, including 2,386 kg of hashish and 121 kg of heroin, hidden in different cargo compartments.
Following the seizure, officials immediately interrogated the crew to gather intelligence on their smuggling methods and other trafficking vessels operating in the region.
Indian Navy’s Commitment to Maritime Security
“This operation highlights the Indian Navy’s effectiveness in deterring illicit activities, including narcotics trafficking at sea. By participating in multinational exercises, the Navy enhances security and stability in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR),” the Navy stated.

India’s Ongoing Crackdown on Drug Smuggling
According to Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, authorities have seized drugs worth over ₹11,311 crore across Indian seaports in 19 separate operations over the past five years.
The largest drug bust occurred on September 19, 2021, at Adani Port, SEZ Mundra, Gujarat, where agencies confiscated 2,988 kg of heroin worth ₹5,976 crore. Similarly, the second-largest seizure took place at VOC Port, Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, on April 20, 2021, where authorities recovered 303 kg of cocaine worth ₹1,515 crore.
This latest Navy operation further strengthens efforts to combat drug smuggling, ensuring greater security in the Indian Ocean and beyond.
