MS Dhoni to Step Aside as CSK Slump in IPL 2025
After a dismal start to their IPL 2025 campaign, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are under intense scrutiny, and the spotlight is now on veteran star MS Dhoni. With just one win in four matches, the five-time champions currently sit at ninth place on the points table, sparking concerns from fans and experts alike.
Despite opening the season with a promising win over Mumbai Indians, CSK’s form has nosedived with back-to-back losses against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Rajasthan Royals, and most recently, Delhi Capitals. What’s worrying is that two of those defeats came at their fortress—Chepauk Stadium, a place where CSK have traditionally been dominant.
Top-Order Fails, Chase Woes Continue
One glaring issue has been CSK’s inability to chase targets, a concern highlighted in all three losses. Their top-order has misfired, failing to build strong partnerships or provide stability early in the innings. The inconsistency has left the middle and lower orders with too much to do.
Against Delhi Capitals, CSK collapsed to five wickets down by the 10th over, needing over 100 runs from 52 balls. MS Dhoni, who usually walks in late, came in at No. 7, scoring 30 off 26 balls*, but couldn’t provide the firepower needed. Vijay Shankar, who remained unbeaten on 69 off 54, also struggled to accelerate, and CSK fell short by 25 runs.
Wasim Jaffer: “If Dhoni Isn’t Captaining, He Should Step Aside”
Former India opener Wasim Jaffer shared his concerns post-match on ESPNcricinfo, suggesting that Dhoni should consider stepping down from the playing XI if he’s not leading the side anymore.
“Yes, if Dhoni isn’t captaining, then it hurts a little seeing him bat this way,” Jaffer remarked, alluding to Dhoni’s inability to make a decisive impact in recent games.
Jaffer acknowledged the challenges Dhoni faces, especially since the 43-year-old only plays in the IPL after retiring from international cricket in 2020.
“It’s tough when you don’t play cricket regularly. That’s why he bats so low. But when you lose five wickets inside 10 overs, there’s no choice. It was good to see Dhoni come in at No. 7 today,” he added.
Bigger Problems Loom for CSK
While Dhoni’s role is under debate, Jaffer believes the real issue lies with CSK’s top order.
“The biggest concern is your top order. They’re not contributing, especially while chasing. This isn’t the CSK we know. Players like Rahul Tripathi and Deepak Hooda haven’t stepped up,” Jaffer said.
He also expressed sympathy for the CSK fan base, who continue to show up in huge numbers at home matches.
“I feel for the fans—they’re always there. But I haven’t seen CSK perform this poorly at home before,” he concluded.

What’s Next for CSK?
As pressure mounts, it remains to be seen whether MS Dhoni will consider stepping back or if CSK’s management will make bold moves to revive their season. With their playoff hopes already under threat, drastic decisions may be on the horizon.
